Why Working On Your Mindset Isn’t The Answer To A Bad Day

During my many years of reading personal development books and attending seminars there was a lot of talk about having the right mindset.

In traditional personal development there’s an emphasis on the need to change our mindset so we can adopt a better one. A sort of positive mindset nirvana is brandished in front of us as if it’s the answer to all problems.

The result for many personal development students is that we are always in searching and seeking mode.  This can make life difficult because by the very nature of how the mind works, we’re never going to be in a positive mindset all of the time.

It’s tricky to control our minds because our thoughts aren’t in our control. Who knew? I didn’t. I chased the idea of controlling my thoughts for years, and then beat myself up when I failed.

This is why being open to experience mind shifts rather than seeking a permanent mindset change is more powerful. It allows us to court insight, with ease. When we know the key to our success isn’t a permanent shift of our ‘mindset,’ it wipes a lot off our plate.

The way it really works is that thoughts randomly drop into our minds. They just do. Sometimes they’re habitual thoughts which we think, over and over, and are tired of thinking.

And sometimes they’re new, fresh thoughts, full of inspiration. It’s a beautiful feeling when this happens. The lovely thing is that humans all operate this way even when we don’t know it.

There’s nothing we need to do to have it happen, other than to begin to understand and respect how our minds work. Fortunately we don’t need a psychology degree to do so.  Thanks to the new fearless understanding I share in my work, it’s simple.

When we experience an insight, a sight from within, our consciousness shifts. We become aware of something we weren’t previously aware of. Our circumstances may seem identical but our understanding of them has shifted.

This is the gift of new thought. It’s so powerful to know that a new thought is always only one thought away. Even when we feel really stuck, like I did yesterday, there’s the possibility of a whole new experience today.

I was feeling bogged down with all the work there is to do to launch my new book Living Fearlessly and I went to bed in a bad mood. Because I now understand how thought works, I didn’t beat myself up or attempt to work on changing my mindset.  I chilled out. Before I went to sleep I was already experiencing fresh thoughts about what to do today. It’s effortless.

It can be this easy when we let it. There’s no need to work on our mindset. It’s as ridiculous as trying to improve how flowers blossom. It’s a waste of time! We can water them but we can’t control how they flower.

And the next new thought that pops in to your mind, may be THE game changer for you.
